Distinguished and Famous people from Lancefield
🤝 Edith Charlotte Onians
Edith Onians was born in Lancefield in 1866 and became a major figure in voluntary welfare work in Melbourne. Beginning in 1897, she taught newspaper boys in the evenings and went on to organise the Melbourne City Newsboys’ Society for 58 years. Its work expanded far beyond literacy classes to meals, clothing, medical and dental care, practical training and recreation. Her approach connected education with the everyday conditions that determined whether a child could benefit from it. Lancefield is her birthplace; the main institution she developed was in Melbourne, a distinction that keeps both parts of her biography clear.
📚 Eleanor May Moore
Eleanor May Moore, born in Lancefield in 1875, became a writer and peace campaigner. A skilled stenographer, she qualified as a court reporter in 1897 but could not pursue that work because she was a woman. Her employment included parliamentary reporting and secretarial work, while her later public activity included opposition to conscription and involvement in peace organisations. That combination of professional skill and exclusion gives her story a sharper edge than a list of honours. Her Lancefield beginnings preceded the Melbourne education and working life in which her campaigning developed.
